Warsash Band helps Harvey

Friday 25 October 2013

The Warsash Band has presented a donation of £200 to the Help4Harvey fund, after using its summer concert to raise money for local charities for the third year running.

Help4Harvey has been set up to raise money to fund treatment for Harvey Young, a 3-year old from Locks Heath who suffers from spastic diplegia. The condition leads to nerve signals from the brain to muscles in Harvey's constantly firing and causing the muscles to tighten. As a result, Harvey is currently unable to walk without assistance.

Spastic diplegia can be treated with a procedure called selective dorsal rhizotomy, which targets and severs the over-firing nerves, while leaving properly firing nerves to the same muscles intact. However, this operation is not easily available on the NHS, so Harvey's parents decided to try to raise the money needed for private treatment in the USA, as well as the intensive physiotherapy that is needed following the operation.

The Warsash Band donated the proceeds of the raffle held during its summer concert on 20th July to the fund for Harvey's treatment. The concert was enjoyed by a large audience, who heard the main band, conducted by Dave Gasser, and the training section led by Jon Audain, showcase their skills with a range of musical styles. After raising nearly £200 in the raffle, the band decided to round this up and yesterday presented the donation of £200 to the Help4Harvey fund.

The band's chairman Alan George said:

"We all enjoy playing such a strong part in the local community and being able to entertain them with such excellent performances. It's especially pleasing that the generosity of our audience has allowed us to give something back to the community by donating to this very worthwhile cause. We'd like to thank everyone who helped us raise a significant amount of money."
