Warsash Band concert supports Teenage Cancer Trust

Monday 16 July 2012

The Warsash Band raised nearly £350 for the Teenage Cancer Trust at its summer concert on 14th July.

The band decided to donate the proceeds of the raffle held during the concert to the Teenage Cancer Trust in memory of Nathan 'Spuddy' Ward. Nathan was a student from Locks Heath who sadly died in January from pineal germ cell cancer. Richard Rawson, whose son Steve was a close friend of Nathan's and who had suggested the idea of raising money for the charity, said:

"It's fantastic to see so many people supporting the Teenage Cancer Trust so generously. We raised twice as much as we normally make on our raffles, which shows that this is a cause close to people's hearts and that they want to remember Nathan by helping others with the disease."

The concert was very well attended with just under 200 people filling the Victory Hall in Warsash. The main band, conducted by Dave Gasser, and the training section led by Jon Audain, wowed the audience with some excellent renditions of a wide variety of music. The concert came to a spectacular climax with a rendition of Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture complete with cannon blasts.

The band's chairman Christopher Mahy said:

"We are delighted that the band has such strong support from the local community and that we were able once again to entertain them with such high quality performances. We are particularly pleased to have raised such a terrific sum from this concert and to give something back to the community by donating our raffle proceeds to this very worthwhile cause. We would like to thank all those who contributed so generously in Nathan's memory."
